Surgical Robot Wows Audience as AOH Introduces Community to Newest Technology

by Kristi Spuhler | Feb 19, 2019
Residents in Wayne, Stark, Tuscarawas and Holmes counties were given a first-hand view of Stryker’s Mako robotic-arm assisted knee application during a recent HealthTalk seminar held by Aultman Orrville Hospital. The hospital is the first in Wayne County to offer this innovative robotic technology.

Dr. Widmer with Mako robotThe HealthTalk featured Dr. Steven Widmer, orthopedic surgeon, who is certified in Mako robotics. Dr. Widmer demonstrated to the audience how the system creates a personalized surgical plan for each patient based on the specific diagnosis and their individual anatomy.

“Early studies suggest the benefits to the patient include less pain and a shorter recovery time,” said Dr. Widmer. “A surgeon takes images of the knee that are turned into a 3D virtual model. It’s loaded into the Mako system software and is used to create a personalized operative plan.”

In addition to the newest surgical orthopaedic technology, Aultman Orrville Hospital offers a continuum of services to support surgical patients including imaging, physical therapy and a transitional care program.

Dr. Widmer will do an encore presentation on March 6 at 6 p.m. in the AOH Community Room. The HealthTalk is open to the public, and no registration is required.
