AOH ED Unveils 'Specialist on Call' for Patients with Stroke Symptoms

by Kristi Spuhler | Apr 23, 2018
ORRVILLE, Ohio (April 23, 2018) – Aultman Orrville Hospital’s Emergency Department has implemented a new telemedicine program called “Specialist on Call,” a service designed to help patients with stroke symptoms.

Launched in late March 2018, the service remotely connects patients and the ED health care team with highly trained neurological specialists. The patient and care team interact via specialized camera, allowing patients to receive some of the best care in the region when time is critical, as it often is at the onset of a stroke. The service also helps facilitate a smooth transition for those who may need to be transferred to another facility for further treatment.

Specialist on Call provides the ED health care team with around-the-clock access to neurologists. These specialists on call are provided with timely data to assist clinicians in making a diagnosis, as well as providing time-sensitive treatments.

“We are pleased to provide this service as an added benefit, especially for stroke patients who require immediate intervention,” said Angela Caldwell, MSN, RN, NE-BC, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer. “By using Specialist on Call, patients receive a diagnosis and treatment quickly, helping to minimize complications of a stroke.”
